It all started within the mind of a courageous and remarkable young woman named Jessica. Her life was not the life of a typical baby, toddler, preteen, teenager and young adult. Right from the beginning of her life, she had to fight the debilitating genetic disease, cystic fibrosis.
But, what is cystic fibrosis?
Many of us hear the words, cystic fibrosis but do not truly understand what it does to a person. In simple terms, cystic fibrosis is a genetic progressive disease that affects around 30,000 people. It causes persistent lung infections and over time it limits their ability to breath. This defective gene causes a thick buildup of mucus in not only the lungs but also the pancreas and other organs. However, every person has different degrees and severity of symptoms.
Many people with a disease like this could let it define them, but not Jessica. She didn't let this disease stop her from living a life full of fun, laughter and love. She made sure to live her life to the fullest, despite having to deal with two-week hospital stays several times a year as the disease progressed. Some lucky patients are able to receive a lung transplant. However, her condition was not conducive to a lung transplant, but that didn't mean she gave up on living. She was a formidable foe for cystic fibrosis.
To show you a little bit of who she was, she often quoted this poem called “To Laugh Often and Much” by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
- To laugh often and much;
- to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
- to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
- to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
- to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
- to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
- This is to have succeeded.
In 2011, she was inspired by a married couple who both had cystic fibrosis. When the wife died, she saw that there was a lack of financial or emotional support there for the husband. She also started noticing a increasing need for a better quality of life for adults with cystic fibrosis. It was then that The Spiritus Project was born. She chose the word “spiritus” because to her it symbolized both the painful reality of breathing everyday but also encompassed her unbending hopefulness that she saw life through. Unfortunately, the project was still in its infancy when Jessica died but it has lived on and has done great things for patients and families in our area.
One of the events through the Spiritus outreach and fundraising programs was the highly successful 2016 Lake Realty Spirited Masters Golf Tournament. Being a mainstay of the Denver, and Lake Norman community we, at Lake Realty, were excited about the opportunity to become the title sponsor of the 2016 event. For more than 25 years, we have been woven into the fabric of the area. The people and businesses of the Denver and Lake Norman community are very important to us. So, we are thrilled to once again be the title sponsor of the (newly changed name) 2017 Lake Realty Spiritus Masters Golf Tournament.
We make it a point to treat each person that walks through our door like family, and with 35 agents we are like one big family. That first event felt like a gathering of family. You can see it in the pictures. There were smiles abound and laughter echoed through the grounds of the beautiful Verdict Ridge Golf and Country Club. We are so lucky to have such an amazing place like the Verdict Ridge Golf and Country Club to have our event. They are a premiere location to have an event at whether it be a wedding, a banquet, a tournament, or even just to go enjoy an amazing meal at Guilties Bistro.
Building off of the success of last years event, this years event promises to be even more successful.
- It is being held on April 10th, 2017
- Registration starting at 9:30 am
- Shotgun start at 11:00 am
- Reception, Awards, and Silent Auction at 5:00 pm
There will been a whole day full of food, golf, drinks, a silent auction, contests, awards, speakers and so much more. In fact, many of you may recall that we had a roving team of photographers taking candid photos to capture the spirit, fun and wackiness of the day.
Even though this was an impromptu idea, we discovered that the players really enjoyed the activity.View all the photos. This year we have formalized it to be more of a competition. That is where the new contest called The Starfish Spirit award comes in. It can be anything that your team can imagine. Be the best dressed, the funniest, the most spirited, the most inspirational.....That means get your thinking caps on folks.
We couldn't be happier to be a part of this year's event. If you are not able to make the event then please consider sponsoring or possibly donating. Every little bit helps The Spiritus Project help more people and families in our area deal with this terrible and life altering disease.
